PTGAH CERTIFICATION CLASSES

The Education Committee will be conducting training classes for becoming a certified tour guide with PTGAH.  Anyone that is interested needs to complete each of the three classes that are being offered.   Each class will be offered twice during the next few months.   We will be testing for certification in October, the date to be determined.

Training classes are offered on the following dates:

      June 6 and Sept 19  -   Houston Present Day -  This two hour class will be taught by Melissa Dixon and Denise Hodges.   It will cover statistics and information that is pertinent to Houston today along with resource information for updating purposes.

     June 13 and August 29 - History of Houston -  This two hour class will be taught by Sandra Lord and Gary White.   It will cover the history of Houston along with some History of Texas.   You will learn about important landmarks and structures throughout the city.

     June 27 and Sept. 26 -  How to Conduct a Tour - This two hour class will be taught by Esther Porter and Lucette Reiger.  You will learn the proper way to conduct a walking or driving tour along with important information about working with groups. 

     Certification Testing:   Date TBA.   The certification test will include three segments.   The first is a written test that will cover Houston History and information about present-day Houston.  The second is a visual identification test of Houston landmarks.   The third is a driving tour of Houston where you will be role-playing as the tour guide.

The Professional Tour Guide Association of Houston was founded in 1999 to increase the level of professionalism in the Houston area tourism industry through continuing education of its members.  The PTGAH’s mission includes the establishment of a professional standard against which all individuals and organizations involved in the tourism industry can be measured.

The PTGAH has an extensive Certification program designed to assure that all its Certified members display a dedication to information accuracy, professionalism and a commitment to a high standard of proficiency in their craft.

Our Mission

To increase the level of professionalism through continuing education of its members.

To establish a professional standard by which all individuals and organizations involved in the tourism industry can be measured.

To promote dedication, information accuracy, professionalism and commitment as the hallmarks of an Association member.

To raise public and private awareness of the tour guide profession.

To address issues regarding the tourism industry with appropriate groups

Association Profile

The PTGAH is a volunteer organization with four membership categories:  Certified Member, Associate Member, Corporate Member,  and Honorary Member.  The PTGAH is governed by a board of directors elected from among the membership with  an Executive Committee providing leadership and handling the routine business of the Association.  Meetings are held monthly at various sites of interest throughout the Greater Houston area.
